Since I am going to spend a portion of my winter break in New York I have begun to look for fun things to do, outside of shopping. I came across a Broadway Musical named Fela! It is about Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a Nigerian political rights activist and musician. Fela, also known as the pioneer of the Afrobeat rhythm/ movement has an inspirational, well-known story.
Unfamiliar with Kuti, I did some research to find out his story. What interested me the most was how Fela used his art of music as the voice of the disenfranchised criticizing the military government, which put him in the forefront of everything politics.
Fela! is a new, upcoming musical, more like experience, that is gaining the support of big names such as Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Will and Jada Smith. It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, but the best part is yet to come. As a former dancer, and big art enthusiast I was sold when I saw that Fela! was artistically directed and choreographed by Bill T. Jones.
Bill T. Jones is one of the more famous modern contemporary dancers/choreographers currently. Jones is one of my idols. I’m exited to see what Fela! will be like. I will definitely post about my experience, especially since Patty LaBelle will be performing as well. My momma loves her some Patty.
